Radio Program Tries To Stub Out Smoking |
||||
| At seven o'clock every morning, Filipino listeners are greeted by the upbeat music of the Yosi Kadiri theme song over DzRJ-AM 810 kHz (Radyo Bandido). The song starts with a hacking cough - then the anti-tobacco tirade begins - "Ngipin naninilaw, mata'y namumula, at amoy bulok pa ang hininga, ang kutis niya'y kulay abo, puede ba please lang, layuan mo ako …." (Discolored teeth, bloodshot eyes, bad breath, ashen complexion, please stay away from me.…) | ||||
KKK sa RJ's Yosi Kadiri smoke-free advocacy is focused on three areas: public vehicles, shopping malls, and school campuses. Cornejo's overall strategy is to first inform the public about the health hazards of passive smoking or second hand smoke and about the law, which prohibits smoking in those places, then second, to encourage people empowerment and law enforcement. The non-smoking public must act to ensure smoke-free places. The degree of participation may vary from politely but firmly confronting smoking ban violators to reporting the violations to the proper authorities. Cornejo's program also campaigns for issues which would hurt tobacco companies the most: increasing the tobacco excise tax, more stringent tobacco control legislation, and strict prohibition of tobacco advertising and smoking in public. Listeners are amazed at the intensity of Cornejo's verbal attacks on shopping mall building administrators, as he angrily points out the various violations of the anti-smoking law in their malls. His two-hour radio program, broadcast five days a week, also flails away at TV and movie stars, who endorse tobacco and are running for public office. These are times when the phone lines jump with numerous callers airing their support for Cornejo and his crusade. Many listeners also ask questions or give their comments by fax, SMS, e-mail or regular post. |
