Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world and the fourth most common risk factor for disease worldwide . It is currently responsible for the death of one in ten adults worldwide (about 5 million deaths each year). If current smoking patterns continue, it will cause some 10 million deaths each year by 2020, 70% of which will be from developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America. Half the people that smoke today - about 650 million people - will eventually be killed by tobacco. 80,000 Filipinos die every year due to 4 major tobacco-related diseases (lung cancer, stroke, heart disease, and chronic obstructive lung disease) . That's 9 or 10 every hour. The Philippine government earns about 26 billion pesos from the sale and manufacture of tobacco and tobacco products each year. But it loses about 149 billion pesos to tobacco-related healthcare and lost productivity. The tobacco expenditure of the poor and poorest Filipino households, on the average, is 10 times of their per capita education expenditure and 13.5 times of their per capita health expenses. Second-hand
smoke (SHS) has been classified by the US Environmental Protection Agency
as a Class A or human carcinogen. Second-hand smoke kills. The tobacco
industry is the original "denial king", and a very good one.
Tobacco kills. Don't be duped. You
