RP celebrates World No Tobacco Day 2001

Tobacco control advocates from all sectors of society gathered together on May 31at the Museo Pambata in Manila to commemorate World No Tobacco Day. The arrival of an estimated 700 bikers and joggers mainly from the Adventist church kicked off the short programme, highlights of which included:

  • Opening address of Dr. Shigeru Omi (Regional Director, WHO-Western Pacific Region)
    "The message is simple: We need to clear the air."
  • Storytelling by Master Emile Justin Cebrian (Alitaptap Storytellers Club)
    "Be Smart, Don't Start"
  • Reading of the Open Letter to President Arroyo from multi-sectoral tobacco control partners
    by Miss Marison Saulog (Children and Tobacco Congress 2000)
  • Reading of Pastoral Letters from the Adventist Church, the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, and the Iglesia ni Cristo and a Letter of Support from the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-National Seretariat for Social Action, Justice, and Peace
  • Declaration of Smoke-free University Policy
    by Dr. Alfredo Ramirez (Chancellor, University of the Philippines Manila)
  • Audiovisual presentation: "We Mind: Kids Deserve a Smoke-free World" (WHO-TFI)
  • Book Launching: Smoke-free Kid's Kit (series of 7) (WHO-TFI)
  • Formal launching of the FCTC Alliance, Philippines (FCAP)
  • Keynote address of Dr. Manuel Dayrit (Secretary of Health)
    "I enjoin everyone to support the campaign against smoking and its health, economic, and social hazards."

Representative Magtanggol Gunigundo, author of the Anti-Tobacco Bill (HB 4244) was also present and announced that HB 12917, a consolidated house bill on tobacco was approved by the Congressional Committee on Health last January 6, 2001.

The programme concluded with a tour of Museo Pambata's Travelling Exhibit on tobacco "Be Smart, Don't Start" and a press conference.
